LinkedIn is a necessity in today’s job market, as many hiring managers and recruiters use the site to find candidates for job openings. Social media tools such as LinkedIn create an efficient way for recruiters to connect with job seekers.
In this day and age recruiters are increasingly using sites like LinkedIn to identify talent. If you’re an active job seeker, stand out from the crowd and land your dream job sooner by using LinkedIn.
Follow the tips below for a successful job search:
1. Complete your profile in its entirety (100%)
- Include all companies, education, and awards. (Job seekers above the age of 40 should leave dates off education and include only 10-15 years of work history.)
- Request recommendations from supervisors, peers, subordinates, other colleagues and customers.
- Tailor your ‘Headline’ (located directly under your name), and be descriptive. (Example: Experienced Transportation Executive, Web Designer and Information Architect, Visionary Entrepreneur and Investor)
2. Use the profile picture that you use on your website or other social networks.
- A picture creates familiarity and branding.
- Don’t upload unflattering pictures “mug shots”. Smile for the camera!
3. Enter key words in the ‘Specialties’ field.
- List keywords that are pertinent to your roles and capabilities (no personal hobbies that don’t relate to your career objectives)
4. Update your LinkedIn ‘Status’ at least every few days.
- Update status with your latest blog posts.
- Enter accomplishments.
- Enter the position and/or industry you’re interested in.
- Enter an “out of office” message if you’ll be away from your computer for an extended period of time.
5. Review and/or revise your job details and accomplishments at least every 6 months.
- It is easy to forget down the road!
6. Include your website and utilize available applications such as Google Presentations.
- Don’t post Facebook or Twitter links on your LinkedIn profile unless they are 100% clean, without unprofessional comments.
7. Do not block incoming emails.
- Recruiters won’t be able to reach you.
8. Join LinkedIn groups and participate in discussions.
- This is an opportunity for you to exhibit many skills including writing, team work, coaching, etc.
- Recruiters are active group participants.
Also, use your LinkedIn profile as an Online Resume and include the profile address in the heading of your resume.
Good luck job seekers!
